Topic: Pursued by His Goodness & Mercy
Text: Psalm 23:6 “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the LORD Forever.”
“Surely goodness and mercy shall pursue me all the days of my life…” Smith’s Literal Translation
This was taken from Psalm 23, a psalm of David. His experiences as a shepherd boy informed the imagery of this psalm.
David was a man who was pursued by God’s goodness and mercy. He was a shepherd boy minding his business when God’s eyes of grace found him and made him the greatest king that ever reigned in Israel, whose throne is established forever.
This Bible verse is a passage that gives us the assurance of God’s benevolent nature towards us all. In this passage, David emphasizes his unwavering confidence in God and in His promises.
God’s goodness is His nature. It reflects His well-being, moral goodness and His desire to bestow His blessings upon His people.
His mercy signifies His covenantal loyalty. His commitment towards His own despite their shortcomings. Psalm 103:17 say, ‘But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear Him, and His righteousness unto children’s children.”
Shall follow me all the days of my life: God’s goodness and mercies are not passive but active. God’s love and blessings continue to pursue us, indicating His everlasting love for us. God’s blessings are not sporadic but consistent.
1. God turns the ordinary to extraordinary: 1 Samuel 9:16
2. God brings purpose out of waste: Romans 8:28
3. God uses foolish things to confound the wise: 1 Corinthians 1:27. God is Sovereign. This shows us that we need to rely on God in all areas of our lives. David, a young boy, killed the Philistine giant.
4. God is not limited by our personal limitations: I am limited, but God cannot be limited. Genesis 18:14
5. God chooses the unlikely, unqualified, and rejected and puts His signet on them: Judges 6:15 God always grants His grace to the unlikeliest because of His Sovereignty. He chose Gideon to save Israel. His family was not known; they were not influential but were idol worshippers. God chose Israel as His beloved, and now He chose you and I . Deuteronomy 7:7
6. God has not forgotten you: Genesis 30:22
7. God has not changed: Psalm 102:27, Isaiah 46:9-10
